Interview with an Esthetician

Laura Troeller has been an Esthetician with the Cosmetic Laser Institute in Anaheim for 6 years. Here, she summarizes what she’s learned, and shares some must-have beauty secrets.

Q: Okay, so first of all – what is an Esthetician, and how did you find yourself wanting to become one?

A: An Esthetician is someone who is licensed to do facials and facial treatments, waxing and make-up. I’ve always had an interest in skin because growing up I had problem skin. I also had a family member get melanoma. I knew that if I was going to become an Esthetician I wanted to do more serious treatments and really help people with their skin. As soon as I got licensed, I went back to school and became certified in medical aesthetics.

Q: What do most people not realize or ‘get’ about cosmetic laser services?

A: Patience. Cosmetic laser treatments are a process. While you may get great results with one, a lot of times it takes a series for best results. Or it may be something you need to get done once a year or a few times a year, depending on the person and the treatment. It’s not typically “one and done” for life, it’s something that needs to be maintained.

Also, a good skin care routine at home will help a lot in maintaining those results.

Q: What would you say to someone who is dealing with problem skin, but is hesitant to try cosmetic laser services in favor of other options (such as drugstore creams, etc.)?

A: I have come across a lot of people who are hesitant to try laser treatments or even chemical peels. They are typically scared of the pain or the downtime. However, it is definitely worth it because those types of treatments will get you the results you need compared to just products from a drugstore, and get you results in faster time! We do all we can to take care of our patients so they have the least amount of pain possible during treatments, as well as give clear post care instructions so they have the fastest recovery possible.

Q: What’s your favorite procedure, and why?

A: Hard to choose! My favorite treatments to do on patients are chemical peels and Microdermabrasion/peel combos. I know with those I am really getting people results they can see and feel.

My favorite procedure to receive here at CLI is the Sciton Profractional laser treatment, which stimulates collagen, helping with fine lines and acne scarring. I try to get it done once a year. I’m also a big believer in Botox for that (almost) instant gratification and believe in starting somewhat young for preventative purposes.

Q: What foods do you recommend for healthy skin?

A: Everyone is different with what can trigger different reactions with their skin. Eating a healthy diet can’t hurt! What’s great for everyone’s skin is water! Drinking lots of water keeps you hydrated, rids the body of toxins, and helps cells function properly.

If water alone is not enough, I recommend a serum that contains a high amount of hyaluronic acid, which holds water/moisture into your skin. My favorite is Lucrece Physician’s Aesthetic Research – Hydration Serum with peptides, which also contains B5. This product will change your life!

Q: Do you have any favorite beauty hacks/tips?

    1. Exfoliation is key for cell turnover and smooth glowing skin. If your skin is on the dryer side, over exfoliating can make it too dry. If you have oily skin and you over exfoliate, your skin will produce even more oil to protect itself. This can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. I recommend exfoliating every other day, to every 3 days, and following with good moisturizers.
    2. Always wear sunscreen! Even when you feel like it’s a cloudy day or are just expecting to be indoors. There is ‘incidental sunlight’ that you may not take into account, such as walking to your car, sitting next to a window or driving. It needs to be at least SPF 30 and I recommend the ones with natural ingredients, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They block more UVA/UVB rays than chemical sunscreens.
    3. If you are having a bad skin day, don’t be afraid to “cheat” with make-up! Choose ones with healthy skin ingredients, and that are suitable for your skin type. And always, always wash your make-up off before bed!
