Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a chronic skin condition, resembling an allergy, characterized by inflammation of the skin; it is most often seen affecting the arms and backside of the knees although it can appear anywhere on the body. While it is most common in infants, it is possible for adults to develop the skin condition. In critical cases, atopic dermatitis can lead to “clear, fluid-filled blisters.”
Healthpointe’s Cosmetic Laser Institute can help you identify and safely treat eczema to prevent further infections and to reduce stress.
Symptoms of Eczema
Eczema causes red, itchy rashes to appear on several parts of the body; it is most commonly seen on the face, wrists, hands, feet, and back of the knees. Additionally, it can be indicated by dry, sensitive skin, rough patches, oozing and crusting skin, and swelling.
Causes of Eczema
Although a definitive cause of eczema is unknown, it is believed to be brought on by a compromised immune system along with a genetic defect that expels most permitted germs into the skin. External factors which can cause dry or sensitive skin, such as the environment, also play a role in the development of eczema. Eczema is frequently seen among families with a history of asthma or other allergies.
There are several possible triggers including: animal shedding, coarse materials, and extreme heat or cold.
Eczema is not contagious.
Treatment of Eczema
Eczema is not curable. However, it can be effectively managed so as to prevent infection, and to provide relief from itching. Cold compresses, lotions, and warm baths can be used to keep the skin moist.
Hydrocortisone, along with other prescription ointments, is used to diminish inflammation. Dermatologist-prescribed antibiotics can also be used to exterminate the infectious bacteria and prevent future outbreaks.
