Rotator Cuff Tears: Expert Tips for Baseball Players

Tears on the Shoulder

Think of a rotator cuff tear as a tear on your shoulder. The rotator cuff is composed of four tendons and muscles converging around the shoulder joint just above the humerus (the upper arm bone above the elbow), forming a cuff. The cuff has two primary functions, namely, to hold your arm in place and to allow it to move in different directions while attached to your shoulders.

The shoulder may be one of the most mobile joints in the body but is has its flaws, such as its overall weakness in relation to the stresses placed upon it. Too much stress caused by repeated strenuous activities, such as fastballs, can result in partial tears in the tendons. Too abrupt stress can also result in the tendons pulling away from the bone or tearing in the tendon’s middle.

Tears on the Eyes

This is not a slight injury either. The tear on the tendons can also put tears in the eyes of even the ‘manliest’ athlete because of the extreme pain in the affected shoulder and arm. The pain will depend on the seriousness of the tear but the pain is inevitable because of the internal injury.

Other symptoms of rotator cuff tear include a feeling of tenderness and weakness in the affected shoulder, difficulty in moving the shoulder especially when lifting the arm above the head, and snapping/cracking sound when moving the shoulder.
