Faster Healing for the Ankle Dislocation

Ways to Maintain the Ankle Dislocation

An ankle dislocation (dislocated ankle) means that the bones in the ankle have moved out of their proper places, which can cause pain, swelling and bruises throughout the following days. Fortunately, you can facilitate an ankle dislocation with faster healing by keeping the following tips in mind.

  • Take your medications properly

Your doctor may prescribe prescription painkillers, which you should take according to instructions even when your pain seems to worsen. The risks for pain medication addiction should always be taken into account in these cases. You should always consult with your doctor, especially at the Healthpointe Corona clinic for more information about prescription painkillers; the clinic is also accessible to people from the Norco, Home Gardens, Mira Loma, and Pedley areas.

  • Visit your doctor as scheduled

Your doctor will schedule regular visits to monitor your progress. This is usually 2 days after your initial consultation. Be sure to show up to your appointment, but if you notice any of your symptoms worsening, then you should call to reset it (and visit urgent care). You must record your symptoms so that you can accurately tell your doctor what, when, and how your symptoms recurred or worsened.

  • Rest your ankle

You may have scheduled activities before the ankle dislocation happened, but you should postpone them in favor of resting your ankle for at least 6 weeks. Avoid putting pressure on your injured ankle for prolonged periods lest the fracture or dislocation worsens.

  • Place ice on your ankle

Ice compress applied on the injured foot for 15-20 minutes at a time every hour or as directed is also recommended for faster healing. You can use a cold compress pack or wrap ice in a towel, which will minimize tissue damage, pain and swelling as well as skin damage; ice directly applied to skin for long periods can damage its surface.

Other methods to facilitate healing of an ankle dislocation include compressing your injured ankle by wrapping it in elastic bandage; elevating your injured ankle as often as possible; and engaging in physical therapy. You should not ignore these recommendations as even a single slip can worsen the dislocation, and can cause symptoms including pain.
