Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery is a type of surgery that results in weight loss by restricting the size of the stomach, or the amount of food a person can eat before feeling full.

How it Works

Gastric Bypass – the stomach is divided into two, with the smaller upper half connected to the small intestine.
Lap Band – An adjustable gastric band fills in the excess space in the stomach.
Sleeve Gastrectomy – 75-85% of the stomach is removed, leaving only the “tube” or “sleeve” portion.
Revision Weight Loss Surgery – Designed to correct or “revise” a past weight loss surgery which resulted in complications or unexpected outcomes.

Who Can Benefit?

Patients with obesity with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or more, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea may benefit from bariatric surgery. When diet and exercise are not enough, your doctor may recommend gastric bypass.

Bariatric surgery is only for people who are willing to adapt a doctor-recommended diet and exercise plan after the surgery. It is not a replacement for diet and exercise, rather, it is designed to help speed up a weight loss and improve health.

What to Expect After Surgery

Depending on the procedure, patients can expect to see up to 75% of their excess weight lost within the first year after surgery.

Common risks of bariatric surgery include nausea, bleeding, gallstones, or infection. Additionally, patients may experience blood clots, sleeve leaking, blood loss and breathing problems (due to the anesthesia), poor nutrition and esophageal spasms. Ghrelin, the hormone that triggers appetite and hunger, may be removed. As a result, patients have significantly less hunger than they did prior to the surgery.
