Lap Band Surgery

Lap Band Surgery is a restrictive bariatric procedure for patients with a BMI between 30 to 40 with comorbidities. Patients undergoing the procedure generally have at least one medical condition directly caused by their weight, such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea, or hypertension.

How it Works

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, commonly known as lap band, restricts the amount of food that a person can consume by placing a small silicone band around the stomach. By squeezing the upper part of the stomach, the adjustable band permits about an ounce of food to enter the body thereby limiting caloric intake resulting in weight loss.

The minimally invasive surgery typically takes between one and two hours to perform. The surgery is completely reversible and does not limit the body’s normal nutritional absorption process.

Who Can Benefit?

A lap band is known to assist those dealing with weight-related conditions, including sleep apnea, diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and more.

The procedure is only applicable to adult patients with a history of failed weight loss through exercise and proper dieting.

What to Expect After Surgery

Post-surgery diet usually consists solely of liquids for about two weeks. Solid foods can be slowly reintroduced into the system. While surgeries such as lap band prevent food absorption, gastric banding surgery does not prevent vitamin deficiencies.

Although recovery time does vary, it is often quick and most patients are able to return to work one week after surgery.

Side effects of gastric band surgery are rare but include nausea, vomiting, wound infections, and minor bleeding.
