Neurology

Neurology is the medical practice of evaluating and treating all categories of disease or impaired function related to the nervous system, and the blood vessels that relate to these structures.

Neurological Disorders and Symptoms

Common conditions include seizures, strokes, Parkinson’s disease, neuropathy, dementia, sleep disorders and syncope, and others, such as:

  • Migraines
  • Dementia
  • Post-Concussion Syndrome
  • Aneurysm
  • Brain tumors
  • Spinal disc diseases

Neurological symptoms can include pain, numbness, mental confusion, headaches, and dizziness, all of which can significantly impact the patients and their activities of daily living.

Causes of Neurological Disorders

Although most neurological patients experience symptoms of the brain, such as headaches or forgetfulness, many neurological disorders are caused by damage to the spine and surrounding nerves. This is because the tissue of the brain is structurally connected to the vessels and tissues of the spinal column. Sometimes, even minor spinal damage can cause lasting neurological symptoms. Other causes include:

  • Genetics
  • Trauma to the Head
  • Infections
  • Respiratory Problems

Treatments of Neurological Disorders

Healthpointe neurologists apply principles of physiology and anatomy to help identify the disorder and the implicated anatomic structures. For diagnostics, we offer Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) testing, which can help determine whether it is a temporary or permanent process, and if medical or surgical treatment can be recommended.
