What you Need to Know about Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

What is noise-induced hearing loss?

Noise-induced hearing loss is a permanent hearing impairment caused by prolonged exposure to high levels of noise. Exposure to excessive noise is the most common cause of hearing loss. The National Institute of Health estimates that approximately 15 percent of Americans between the ages of 20 to 69 have high frequency hearing loss related to occupational or leisure activities.

How does a loud noise cause hearing loss?

Loud noises can cause damage to the hair cells in the inner ear and to the hearing nerve. Damage can occur from a brief and intense noise (such as an explosion), or from continuous loud noises (noises in a loud work environment). Consequently, hearing loss from loud noises can occur immediately, or it can gradually occur over years of continuous exposure.
