Heart Disease In America

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both women and men. Each year, approximately 715,000 Americans have a heart attack, and about 600,000 people die from heart disease in the United States each year. Heart disease refers to several types of heart conditions with the most common type in the United States being coronary heart disease, which occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. While the statistics for heart disease may be alarming, the good news is that heart disease is preventable and controllable. Anyone can start taking small steps to stay healthy and prevent heart disease.

Some tips for preventing heart disease can include:

  1. Eating a healthy diet: Choosing healthy food options can help you avoid and prevent heart disease. Be sure to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables while avoiding foods high in saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol. Limiting salt or sodium in your diet can help to also lower your blood pressure.
  2. Maintain a healthy weight: Being overweight increases your risk for heart disease. If you know your height and weight, you can calculate your body mass index to determine whether your weight is in a healthy range.
  3. Exercise regularly: Physical activity is important to your overall health and it can help you maintain a healthy weight as well as lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Adults should engage in moderate-intensity exercise for at least 30 minutes on most days of the week.
  4. Do not smoke: Smoking cigarettes can greatly increase your risk for heart disease. If you do smoke, it is best to quit as soon as possible.
  5. Limit alcohol use: Drinking too much alcohol can increase your blood pressure.
  6. Monitor your blood pressure: There are no symptoms for high blood pressure, so it is important for you to have it checked on a regular basis during your visit with your physician.
  7. Check your cholesterol: Your cholesterol should be checked at least once every 5 years.
