Care for Concussions: What You Should Know

Concussions, or traumatic brain injuries (TBI), are defined as impact to the head resulting in changes to the brain’s functions. The disruptions may come in several forms including functional independence, personality changes, and cognitive changes, among others, with each affected individual experiencing a unique set of symptoms (i.e., type, duration, and intensity).

Fortunately, most concussions can be treated with proper medical and home care. The trick is in getting appropriate medical care particularly in terms of a recovery program provided by Healthpointe clinics across California, such as in Garden Grove, Long Beach and Los Angeles.

But how do you know that you have a concussion? Keep in mind that concussions are usually caused by a blow to the head, such as engaging in contact sports or being involved in a vehicular accident but it can also be caused by extreme shaking to the head and body.

You may not immediately be able to observe the signs (i.e., subtle) but in hindsight, you and your doctor will be able to connect the dots. You may experience a few or several of the following symptoms that should alert you or your caregiver (e.g., spouse, parent) to bring you for consultation to a Healthpointe doctor in Anaheim, for example:

  • Headaches
  • Temporary loss of consciousness immediately after the blow to your head or a few hours after the impact
  • Feeling of confusion
  • Appearing dazed (i.e., out of it)
  • Amnesia particularly about the events surrounding the event
  • Dizziness
  • Ringing in your ears (i.e., tinnitus)
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Delayed response to queries or reduced ability to communicate
  • Slurred speech
  • Unexplained fatigue

Always discuss your concussion treatment options with our Healthpointe doctors especially when you have high risks for its complications. Keep in mind that concussions will increase your risks for complications, such as epilepsy, post-concussion syndrome, and post-traumatic headaches or vertigo, and even fatal brain swelling in case of a second impact before the first concussion was diagnosed and treated.

Healthpointe’s doctors and surgeons are available for consultations on all concussion injuries; for more information on how to care for concussions please call (888) 824-5580 or visit
