How Your Eyes Can Reveal Brain Tumors (& Other Diseases)

Brain Tumors and Your Eyes

Remember Romeo’s eloquent love-speech for Juliet, in Act II, Scene II?

Her eye in heaven
Would through the airy region stream so brightly riddled with neurological symptoms
That birds would sing and think it were not night.

– Shakespeare?

Okay, we admit we added a few words. But just to make a point! And the point is this: Your eyes betray more than you think. In fact, your eye doctor can tell a bunch of things about your health – like if you have diabetes, hypertension, and autoimmune disorders  – just by looking in your eyes!

So, how do brain tumors play in?

When a tumor begins to develop in the brain, it can often press on the optic nerve – the nerve that controls your sight. This can result in blurred vision, dilating pupils, and other optical symptoms. If you experience anything unusual relating to your sight, talk to your doctor right away.

…And other surprising symptoms?

If it’s been a minute since your last general health check-up, your eye doctor may have some surprising news for you. That’s because he or she can also diagnose symptoms of high blood pressure, high glucose, and even early diabetes – which can cause changes in optical veins, eye twitching, and retinal damage, respectively.

The takeaway? In addition to general health physicals, get eye check-ups regularly. And if you notice strange eye activity, don’t hesitate!

And the next time you pick up Romeo and Juliet, consider this: if Shakespeare was telling the truth, and Juliet’s eyes really were as brightly-colored as the stars, then she may very well have been presenting with some severe health issues. Or, perhaps not – and Romeo was just using a pickup line. Either way, her best bet would’ve been to visit a doctor!
