Neck Pain

Pain in the neck area is one of the most common types of ailments in the world. The neck is the upper part/cervical spine of the vertebrae that allows movement and flexibility of the head in all directions. The cervical spine area is susceptible to serious conditions that warrant orthopedic expertise, such as acute or chronic pain in the neck. Cervical spine pain is discomfort in any of the structures in the neck, which can include the muscles, nerves, spinal vertebrae, and the cushioning discs in between the spinal vertebrae.

Overall, patients may experience restriction in range of motion and movement due to pain in the neck. The pain may also radiate toward the shoulders or the base of the skull. If the pain involves nerves, the individual may feel numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arm, hand, or elsewhere. As a result of the nerves becoming pinched in the neck, other symptoms of pain in the neck may include headaches, facial pain, and shoulder pain.

General Causes

The most common cause of cervical spine (neck) pain is muscle strain or tension, which occurs usually as a result of everyday strenuous activities such as having poor posture or too many hours hunched over a desk. Your neck joints will also experience wear and tear with age that leads to osteoarthritis in your neck and other associated neck symptoms. Traumatic accidents or falls can also cause neck injuries, such as disc herniation, vertebral fractures, blood vessel injury, or whiplash. Diseases such as meningitis, scoliosis, cancer, or rheumatoid arthritis are also factors of pain in the neck.
