Leg Ulcers and Foot Ulcers

Venous Statis Ulcers
Venous statis ulcers are common in patients who have a history of leg swelling, varicose veins, or a history of blood clots in either the superficial or the deep veins of her legs. Venous statis ulcers are usually found below the knee and primarily on the inner part of the leg just above the ankle. These types of ulcers may affect one or both legs.

Neurotropic (Diabetic)
Neurotropic or diabetic ulcers occur primarily in people with diabetes. Nerve damage in the feet is common in diabetics, which causes a loss of foot sensation and increases the risk of being unaware of foot injuries. This usually leads to a foot amputation. These types of ulcers are usually located at increased pressure points at the bottom of his feet.

Arterial (Ischemic Ulcers)
Arterial or ischemic ulcers are common in patients who have a history of poor circulation in the legs and may have co-occurring disorder. These types of ulcers are usually found on the heels, tips of toes, and between the toes where the toes rub against one another. They can also occur commonly in the nail bed if the toenail cuts into the skin or if there is an ingrown toenail.

How are leg and foot ulcers treated?
An evaluation by a medical professional is necessary to determine diagnosis and to formulate a treatment plan. A wound specialist can examine the wound thoroughly and may perform tests such as X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, and non-invasive vascular studies to help develop a treatment plan.
