Getting to Know Skin Grafts

What is a Skin Graft?

A skin graft is a surgical procedure which involves removing the skin from one part of the body and transplanting it into a different part. Healthy skin is taken from a place on your body called “The Donor Site”. The skin graft is then carefully spread on the bare area where it is being transplanted. Typically, this type of surgery is performed while you are under general anesthesia, so that you will be unconscious and not experience any pain.

What are the reasons for skin grafts?

Skin grafts may be recommended for:

  • Skin infections causing large amount of skin loss
  • Deep burns
  • Large open wounds
  • Bed sores or other ulcers on the skin that do not heal well

What are the types of skin grafts?

There are two basic types of skin grafts, which includes:

  • Split-level thickness grafts: involves removing only the top two levels of the skin from the donor site. These grafts are used to cover large areas.
  • Full-thickness grafts: involves removing the muscles and blood vessels as well as the top layers of skin from the donor site. These grafts are typically used for small wounds on a highly visible part of the body.
