Not Just Your Typical Hernia

A typical hernia is different from a sports hernia, the latter of which is also known as core muscle injury.

Sports hernia refers to the tearing of the muscles and/or tissues in your core muscles, which not only include your abdominal muscles (i.e., six-pack abs) but all the other muscles used in stabilizing the pelvis. The condition can affect all athletes (i.e., soccer to football, recreational to professional).

Not all sports hernias cases require urgent medical attention. For example, most injuries to the supporting muscles located at the back and side of the abdomen are more likely to heal on their own, perhaps with the RICE protocol coupled with over-the-counter painkillers, if necessary.

But when the injuries occur on the front abdominal muscles, proper medical treatment, which can include surgery and rehabilitation, is essential for recovery within 3-7 weeks after the injury was sustained.

The first, and often the most important, step is finding the best surgeon specializing in the treatment of core muscle injuries. This should not be a problem when you live or work near a Healthpointe clinic in Corona, which also serves the areas of Norco, Home Gardens, Mira Loma, and Pedley.

Keep these tips in mind to hasten your recovery from surgery:

  • Talk with your doctor about the appropriate exercises that can keep you in good shape despite your sports hernia. Being in relatively good shape will help in your faster recovery.
  • Avoid overdoing on rest. While rest for a few days may be recommended, overdoing on the rest can result in the loss of muscle tone. This can increase your risks for a second round of injury when you engage in normal sports activities again.

Of course, being an active participant in a core physical therapy program is always recommended.
