What ER Pain Doctors Won’t Tell You

Think you need to go see an ER pain doctor? Think again. Here are the top secrets ER pain doctors won’t tell you, revealed!

  1. Urgent cares are better. To put it blatantly, ER doctors are rushed, and if your condition is not life-threatening, you are moved to the bottom of the wait list. Even when you are seen, the visit is rushed, and can come with a mess of costs.  In terms of cost, wait times, and the time your doctor will spend with you, urgent cares are the way to go.
  2. You may end up more confused. If you entered the ER thinking you simply needed medication for a headache, think again. Because of fear of lawsuits, most ER doctors want to cover all the bases to make sure it isn’t something serious – even when they secretly know it isn’t. Expect specialists you’ve never heard of, and testing you never knew existed.
  3. You may have to pay out-of-pocket for huge bills. Yeah, you double-checked that your insurance covered that particular ER. However, certain doctors within that ER could be out-of-network. Oh, insurance companies are sly! But you can outsmart them. Just call ahead of time (if your condition is not life-threatening) and check in with an urgent care. Your pocket will thank you.
  4. Expect to get sicker. Peak hours at an emergency room are packed with practically everyone and their mom, and usually in a small room. The amount of germs that can cause bacterial and viral infections (check this out for prevention!) is phenomenal, and a fraction will probably end up on you. If you must go to an ER, Wash. Your. Hands.
